Land Conversion and Market Equilibrium: Insights from a Simulated Landscape
نویسندگان
چکیده
We specify a system of equations that fully reflects the supply and demand sides of the market for agricultural open space at equilibrium. Although simple, the system is exceedingly flexible and allows for household and parcel heterogeneity. We derive an empirical model directly from the structural equations and contrast this using a simulated landscape with the econometric specification most often found in the literature. We then show how the model can be used to project land-use change into the future and for policy simulation. Finally, we use the model to examine the impact of common land conservation policies in Europe. JEL Classification R15, Q24

Changes of Landscape Spatial Structure as a Result of Transformation of Land-Ownership
The aim of the research is to analyse the landscape structure changes from the end of the Soviet times in 1974– 1986 until 2005 when market economy existed in Lithuania. The changes of landscape structure were observed in 100 sample areas (squares) each of them having 2.5 km area and distributed in different landscape types. The changes in sample areas (squares) with determination of land cover...
متن کاملApplication of Artificial Neural Network in Landscape Change Process in Gharesou Watershed, Golestan Province
Land use change is certainly the most important factor that affects the conservation of natural ecosystems, resulting the conversion of natural lands such as forests and pastures into agricultural, industrial and urban areas. Despite numerous studies investigating landscape patterns due to land use change, the driving forces of landscape change has been less studied in Iran. In this study, Arti...
متن کاملLandscape Outcomes in a Model of Edge-Effect Externalities: A Computational Economics Approach∗
This paper examines the impact of distance-dependent spatial externalities, referred to as “edge-effect externalities”, on free-market equilibrium land use patterns. Under edge-effect externalities, maximization of production possibilities will depend on minimization of landscape fragmentation, implying that both the correct allocation and the correct arrangement of land uses will be necessary ...
متن کاملMonitoring and Prediction of Land Use/Cover Changes in Shadegan International Wetland, Iran
Quantifying land use/land cover changes is essential to monitor and assess the ecological consequences of human disturbances. Ecological condition and water quality of wetlands are highly related to the landscape characteristics, including land use/land cover (LULC) types and their fractions in the upland and the surrounding landscape. The changing characteristics of LULC in Shadegan Internatio...
متن کاملModeling the Relative Contributions of Land Use Change and Harvest to Forest Landscape Change in the Taihe County, China
Forests are under pressure from land use change due to anthropogenic activities. Land use change and harvest are the main disturbances of forest landscape changes. Few studies have focused on the relative contributions of different disturbances. In this study, we used the CA-Markov model, a land-use change model, coupled with a forest landscape model, LANDIS-II, to simulate dynamic change in Ta...
